This is a fantastic way to explore more of Central Australia at either the start or
the finish of your time in Alice Springs. Learn about Aboriginal culture, traditional bush
tucker and flora and fauna of Central Australia
This is an exciting day spent exploring the majestic Western McDonnell ranges that
surround Alice Springs. The unspoiled beauty of these ranges can be explored in depth
as we spend a whole day in the ranges visiting water holes and gorges.
We begin early morning to get the best of the day as we travel west onto
Larapinta Drive to access the McDonnell Ranges. We trail the ranges and get a glimpse
of Mt Sonder before arriving at our first stop, the picturesque Glen Helen Gorge,
where morning tea is available at the homestead. The homestead provides the opportunity
for scenic flights over the ranges (own expense) and the opportunity to view the artwork
of the famous Aboriginal artist, Albert Namatjira.
We continue along the ranges to Ormiston gorge, where there is the opportunity
for several different bush walks. Of notable interest is the renowned Ghost Gum Walk,
taking in the breathtaking gorge from above and a chance to experience the real beauty
of the gorge.
Travelling further East, we explore The Ochre Pits which display many different
varieties of ochre used by Aboriginals. A talk is given on the traditional uses of
ochre by the Aboriginals and its cultural significance. We then continue into Ellery Creek Big
Hole, one of the most pristine water holes in the McDonnell ranges for a swim if possible
and then onto John Flynn's grave, the founder of the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
We end the day at sunset on Anzac Hill where we watch the sun set over the
McDonnell Ranges witnessing the changing colour of the mountain ranges around
Alice springs. A great end to a Remote Tour.
